Geniş Açı Project Office (GAPO) is an independent platform for photography and visual arts based in Türkiye. Founded in 2007 by cultural managers Refik Akyüz and Serdar Darendeliler, GAPO builds on the experience and knowledge developed through Geniş Açı Photography Magazine (1997–2006), one of the pioneering independent photography publications in Türkiye.
Since its establishment, GAPO has developed and supported projects that contribute to the production, discussion, and circulation of photography and visual arts, while connecting photographers from Türkiye with cultural professionals and institutions both locally and internationally.
As an organizational and curatorial team, GAPO works to strengthen the field of photography in Türkiye and to create opportunities for dialogue, exchange, and collaboration across different cultural contexts. Its work is grounded in a commitment to artistic freedom, cultural diversity, pluralism, and open dialogue.
GAPO works independently as well as in collaboration with local and international institutions and initiatives, including SALT, Anadolu Kültür, Depo, Hayy Open Space, World Press Photo, NOOR, ACCORT, ISSP, Fotografia Europea Reggio Emilia, Festival Circulation(s), Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture, and Saison de la Turquie en France.
Through short-, medium-, and long-term workshops, discovery projects supporting emerging photographers, portfolio reviews, and alternative approaches to education, GAPO creates spaces for learning, discussion, and exchange. These initiatives aim to support photographers in developing their practices and capacities, while encouraging new forms of artistic production and collaboration.
