Organised by GAPO in collaboration with SALT, 'Photography Workshop with Martina Hoogland Ivanow: Isolation and Belonging, Juxtapositions in Photography' was a six-day workshop that brought together participants from Türkiye, Iran, Portugal, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Each participant focused on a personal theme and developed a body of work around it.
For Swedish photographer Martina Hoogland Ivanow, the photographic image is the final link in a chain that connects individual observations to insights into the complexity of life. The dark tones and striking aesthetics of her work raise a series of questions about the “outside” and the experience of being an “outsider.” Addressing these questions not only to the subjects of her images but also to those who look at them, Hoogland Ivanow sees photography as a way of working with the subconscious, with technique, and at the same time with reality: “I want to create a space for the viewer and engage with questions rather than answers.”
The workshop began with participants and Hoogland Ivanow presenting and discussing their work with one another. It continued with discussions around two groups of five photographs selected by each participant—one comprising works they were satisfied with and the other works they were less satisfied with. The participants then developed their individual projects through an ongoing exchange of ideas with Hoogland Ivanow. On the final day, the projects were presented at a public event open to all, and a limited-edition zine of 100 copies was published.
