NOOR Photography and the NOOR Foundation, in collaboration with Nikon Europe, organise an annual masterclass to support documentary photographers working in emerging markets in different parts of the world. The 2014 programme was held in Istanbul from 24–28 March in collaboration with GAPO and hosted by SALT Galata. Fifteen participants were selected from 153 applications, representing Azerbaijan, Armenia, Palestine, Georgia, Iraq, Iran, Cyprus, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Türkiye.

Over the five-day workshop, four NOOR photographers—Andrea Bruce, Bénédicte Kurzen, Jon Lowenstein, and Stanley Greene—together with NOOR director Evelien Kunst, shared their experience with the participants, reviewed their portfolios, and discussed ways to strengthen their editing skills and develop and select stories.

As part of the masterclass programme, American photographer Jon Lowenstein also gave a public artist talk at SALT Galata on Wednesday, 26 March. Known for his long-term, in-depth documentary projects that question the status quo, Lowenstein presented his South Side series, which he had been working on for more than a decade.
