Organised by GAPO with the support of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Nikon Türkiye, the 'Hellen van Meene Masterclass' invited participants to develop a project around a subject they selected together with van Meene.
Born in 1972, Hellen van Meene studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. In 2001, she was nominated for the Citibank Photography Prize (now the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize), one of the most prestigious awards in contemporary photography. Having begun her career photographing young girls in her hometown, van Meene later expanded her work to include androgynous young men, gaining international recognition for her intimate, carefully constructed portraits. Characterised by a high degree of collaboration between photographer and subject, these staged portraits evoke the uncanny nature of adolescence.
On Saturday, 24 May, van Meene also gave an artist talk at Elipsis Gallery, discussing how she creates her photographs, and how she approaches and selects her subjects.
