Organised by GAPO with the support of Nikon, the 'Photography Workshop with Michael Ackerman' was a discussion- and production-based workshop in which 11 photographers spent a week either beginning a new project or developing an ongoing one.

Born in Tel Aviv in 1967, Michael Ackerman received the Young Photographer of the Year Award at the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Awards in 1998, the Nadar Prize in 1999 for his book End Time City, and the SCAM Roger Pic Award in 2009. In 2010, he published Half Life, his latest book at the time, bringing together photographs focused on Poland and Berlin. Represented by Galerie VU’ in Paris, Ackerman has been recognised in the photography world since his first exhibition for his radical and distinctive approach. Working in black and white and with heavy grain, he explores ways of photographing under extremely difficult lighting conditions, creating enigmatic yet evocative images. His dark, grainy photographs, infused with emotions such as love, unease, and obsession, turn inward, searching for and confronting personal anxieties, doubts, and suffering within the world around him.

Throughout the workshop, Ackerman held both group and one-to-one sessions with the participants, reviewed their previous work as well as the projects they produced during the workshop, and worked with them to complete their project edits.
